Woodcarving, Chiang Mai & a little context.
QuietCarve’s selection starts in Chiang Mai. Understanding a little of the region’s woodcraft gives these small objects a wider context.
A village known for carving.
Baan Tawai is a well-known woodcarving and handicraft village in Chiang Mai. The local Baan Tipmanee woodcarving center describes a range of traditions found there, including carved wood, gilding, lacquerware, basketry and textiles.
More than one kind of woodwork.
Baan Tipmanee’s own collection includes relief carvings and freestanding sculptures, with mythical animals and Buddhist subjects among the works it describes. That variety is a useful reminder of how much can sit within the word “woodcraft.”
Where our own story begins.
Our first cats were selected from an existing shop in a Chiang Mai woodcarving village. We have not yet confirmed the village name or documented the individual makers. This note introduces the region; it does not attribute our cats to Baan Tipmanee or to a specific Baan Tawai workshop.
As we learn more about the pieces we select, the notebook gives us a place to share those details carefully.
